French 75
French 75
Usually prepared with gin rather than cognac, the French 75 was created in the 1920s. Its name comes from the French army’s 75mm artillery gun, in use during the First World War. Indeed, it was said that this cocktail was just as dangerous as a shot of the famous artillery piece. The cognac version comes from David Embury's "The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks" (1948). It is more powerful and slightly sweeter. The marriage of cognac with champagne works beautifully and makes for a very fresh cocktail.
